Dan Thompson, D.D.S.
After a few minutes talking with Dan Thompson, D.D.S., any patient would feel right at home. Especially if you get him talking about his upbringing on a farm in McMinn County. Or his love of the Tennessee Volunteers. Frankly, it’s hard not to appreciate this East Tennessee native and his deep roots in the area.
Dr. Dan Thompson is also a Knoxville dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry including Full Dental Implants and Lumineers® as well as general dentistry. His dentist office is located in Farragut, Tennessee, inside Ft. Sanders West.
Dr. Dan understands the value of getting to know his patients on a more personal level and getting to know their families as he has since his early days of becoming a Dentist. He’ll say it’s a generational thing which is also something you’ll find out about his upbringing.
Dr. Dan is the son of an Industrial Engineer and Manhattan Project veteran. That was his mom. In fact, she was the first Industrial Engineering major at UT and she later earned an Award of Excellence as being an integral part of the secret project in Oak Ridge. His dad, a WWII veteran fought at the Beaches of Normandy and later returned home to the multi-generational farm to raise dairy and beef cattle.
“I’ve always respected the generational aspect that I think is prevalent in East Tennessee,” says Dr. Dan. “I’ve lost count of how many of my patients who were young kids that have gone on to become parents and I’ve treated them and, in a lot of cases, their grandparents as well. I can count on a few funny stories, pictures of kids, grandkids, you name it throughout the day. It’s part of what I look forward to in working here every day. And sometimes, they even like to hear my stories,” he says with a laugh.
He also looks forward to helping people “get their smile back,” a slogan he has carried with him since his early days of practicing cosmetic and general dentistry in Knoxville. Dr. Dan uses the latest technology to diagnose, treat and “fix” imperfections in his patients’ smiles.
“I’ve always been a fixer, I suppose,” Dr. Dan continues. “Growing up on a farm and having depression-era parents, you learn how to do things with your hands. That’s why I chose dentistry and what has led me to become the best cosmetic dentist I can be. I like to fix things. I like to help people smile. And for me, those things go hand in hand.”
Dr. Dan Thompson uses his skill of fixing things in many areas including full dental implants. It is a skill that few other dentists in the Knoxville area offer.
“For dental implants, I do the entire implant,” offers Dr. Dan. “If you go to an oral surgeon, many times, you’re just getting the actual part that is the implant. The full implant includes the implant and the post. You still need the crown and you would need to go to a cosmetic dentist to get that. Since I like fixing things, I do the entire process here. And that’s a tremendous advantage both with cost savings and convenience for my patients. They really have a reason to smile afterwards.”
Dr. Dan is the first dentist in Knoxville to offer Lumineers, a cosmetic procedure to help patients realize better-looking teeth and enhance their smile. These porcelain slips fit on the face of the tooth helping alleviate large gaps, misshapen, misaligned and stained teeth. It also helps with uneven gums and teeth and unnatural bridges and crowns.
“Lumineers are an incredible option to help people who’ve spent their whole lives worrying about their smile,” explains Dr. Dan. “It’s not a surgical procedure. It’s relatively simple and the results are amazing. It’s all part of what I do to help patients get their smile back.”
Dr. Dan and his staff routinely see patients for cleanings, exams, x-rays and promoting overall tooth and gum health. His dental practice in West Knoxville near Pellissippi Parkway performs a variety of tooth restoration procedures like crowns, and fillings plus TMJ treatment, gum disease treatment and more. The practice also is home to cosmetic procedures like Lumineers and Dental Implants.
“We do a lot of procedures, but helping patients get their smile back no matter what it takes to get them there is what I like most about dentistry,” continues Dr. Dan. “I’ve literally had patients crying when they see what we’ve done to help them get the smile they’ve only dreamed of. Of course, that leads to my staff and me crying as well when we all see the transformation. It has made all the time that I’ve put into becoming who I am today all the more worth it. It is truly rewarding.”
Dr. Dan graduated from University of Tennessee and went onto UT’s School of Dentistry in Memphis before returning to Knoxville to practice full time.
When he’s not practicing dentistry, you might find him with his wife, Nancy, among the 100,000 fans at Tennessee football games. Or, virtually any other sport UT is playing at the time. Together, they love to spend time with their kids and go on family vacations.
“I suppose traveling is something you just need to do,” explains Dr. Dan. “I’ve been to 6 of the 7 continents and even if I don’t make it to Antartica, I know I’ve seen some incredible places in my life. I’ve experienced Africa, Europe, Asia and pretty much anywhere else in the world. Nancy and I cannot get enough of seeing the world. It’s something we’ll always do I suppose.”
Back home in Knoxville, Dr. Dan will always have a story, whether it’s his travels or his love of the Vols. One thing is for sure, he likes fixing things. And sometimes, if he can “fix a smile” he’s made a difference. And that’s what he’s always wanted to do.

Wanda E. , Excellent
The office atmosphere is very good. Everyone looked happy, glad to be there. I have been to doctor's offices where the staff are obviously unhappy. This does not inspire confidence, and makes patients feel uncomfortable. I have dropped two physicians for this reason. Sep 18, 2015
